On Saturday we went to the Pittsburgh Zoo. The drive wasn't too bad, except Randall gets frustrated driving in the city so we got turned around for awhile before I decided to break out the VZW Navigator.
When we got there it was humid and overcast, but then it started to sprinkle. It wasn't too heavy so we continued on. Randall actually liked the rainy weather because it was less crowded. The zoo is a bit smaller than I thought and it still has some of the older enclosures. But what was really nice was how close you really were to the animals. A great example of this was the elephants, the bull African elephant outside would follow the people and show off. He would pose for pictures and he made sure everyone got a chance to see him. In the indoor enclosure we saw the three female elephants, one young male, and one of the new female calves. She was so cute! Corbin and Nora stood there looking at them forever. I think that was our favorite part of the entire zoo.
I also liked the gorilla enclosure, it is very grassy and peaceful looking. Not like the Columbus Zoo where it looks like a giant playground. We also visited the aquarium, which was really nice. The penguin area was a little sad looking and it is completely indoors. St. Louis has the best penguin area we've seen. We also saw the polar bears and the otters. Since the zoo closed at 5pm and it was starting to rain harder we skipped the children's park. We'll try that again next time we go.
The drive back was pretty good, it only took us 3 hours, plus the weather got better the further west we traveled. I think the kids had a blast even with the rain. And Corbin went the whole day without having an accident!!!! Even in the car!!!
