Conversations with Corbin

WHEN: Thursday

WHERE: Car ride home from preschool

CONVERSATION:

ME: How was school today? What did you do?

CORBIN: We went outside and we did hand painting.

ME: That sounds fun. Did you read any stories today?

CORBIN: Yes, but Mommy I have to tell you something.

ME: okay . . .

CORBIN: Mommy, Ella said she likes me.

ME: Which Ella?

CORBIN: The Ella that is in my class at preschool. But Mommy, she's mad at me because I told her I couldn't marry her.

ME: I see . . .

CORBIN: I said I was already marrying a different Ella. You know, the Ella that lives close to Oma and Opa, I'm going to marry her.

ME: Well honey, that's a long ways away. You can still play with the Ella in your class, or any other girl for that matter.

CORBIN: But Mommy, you and Daddy are married and Daddy doesn't play with other girls.

ME: Well, um . . . Daddy has friends that are girls, just like Mommy has friends that are boys. Besides you're not married yet and you're too young to be in a committed relationship. Maybe we should set up a playdate with Ella or Bridget or maybe Kennedy and Kerrigan?

CORBIN: Okay. And Mommy, I still want to marry Ella.
